Book Review: Defining Autism from the Heart
Author: Kerry Magro
I recently read an amazing book written by Kerry Magro, a nationally recognized Autism advocate who is on the spectrum himself. The book, “Defining Autism from the Heart”, was the most authentic, informative, and enlightening book I have read about what it is like to have Autism. In his book, Kerry describes what it is like to be on the spectrum and gives useful advice everyone could implement in their lives – regardless of whether they have a relation to Autism. This is a great resource for everyone.
“You are not damaged and aren’t less. You are as right as anyone can be in the world.”
My favorite part of the book was when he described his experience of when he first understood he had Autism at age 11. I found this the most interesting part of the book because my brother is currently going through a similar experience and having a hard time dealing with it. Kerry’s advice to “keep the love in the room” and understand that Autism is not a disease and the ability to live an extremely fulfilling life is still possible hit close to home for me. It held even more value coming from someone who is leading an exceptional life.
Kerry’s journey is remarkable; he was nonverbal and is now a national speaker! You can watch some of his speaking engagements here. Public speaking is something everyone struggles with and to see Kerry excelling makes me excited for my brother’s future. It is a reminder to never put limitations on someone.
Yes! I highly recommend this book not only for people on the Autism spectrum (I gave the book to my brother to read) but also to anyone with a close friend or family member on the spectrum. Ultimately, this book is great for anyone and everyone! I think even those without a relation to Autism should read this. It is a quick read and broken up into easily digestible sections.
